My boyfriend and I are an unusual couple. We both fight at the international level in Taekwondo. We also live 1200 miles apart, and have been together for about two years now.

In January he came to where I live to watch me fight in a big tournament. I got knocked out. Half of my face was bleeding and I couldn’t open my left eye or move my jaw.

When I was able to get up, my boyfriend was the first one over to the medic to see me. He was by my side before my parents or any of my team mates. He held me while I was still crying from the shock and pain. He kissed the places that were bleeding, and I slept on his leg for a few hours before getting up and fighting again. By that time, my face was a swollen mess. I was turning heads and getting stares as I walked back onto the floor. He spent the night at my house. The first and only time in our relationship that he’s been there so far. I just couldn’t get over it. I kept thinking. He’s in my room! He’s in my bathroom! He’s eating dinner at our table!

The excitement and happiness of being with him for the first time in six months took away so much of the pain - physical, and emotional from losing. Even with scratches all over my face, he still made me feel beautiful. <3
