They sat next to each other in dorm-provided blue cushioned chairs in front of his bare desk. Rocking back and forth, facing each other, cross-legged and giggly.
“I’m going to teach you how to listen to music,” he said, humming the melody of the song he had clicked on iTunes. She laughed at his attempt, and they sat swaying there, heads together, his eyes closed and her eyes fixtated on his face. Music steadily playing from his state of the art speakers whilst the sound of video games was faint in the background. And as their eyes met, oblivious to the song, a lump began forming in her throat. He closed his eyes and began humming again, taking her hand and playing with it. She laughed at the gesture but her eyes started to well up with tears. And when he lifted his head and looked at her, tears began falling down her face. He gazed intently on her face. She sensed alarm in his eyes. “This moment. This moment will pass away soon,” she thought. “And pretty soon, I’ll be alone again.” She felt the inevitable. Him growing cold again once she flew back to school. Her grasping for his attention. And the worst part? That despite the future, despite if they did end up together, she knew that being by his side at every moment of her life was impossible. None of them said a word. She smiled and cried softly and he bowed his head. And when she kissed him on the forehead, he quickly wiped the tears off of his own face. But tears wouldn’t stop streaming down. “There’s a hole in my roof,” he whispered. “Right on top of us. And it just keeps on raining.”
