Most people look at this picture and think of what a perfectly cute fairy tale love story it looks like. And they would be partially correct. It was a story of mutual sacrifice, selfless affection, mutual improvement, and love. But it was also a story of failed communication, fundamental differences, and love ending.

He was the small chink of light at the end of her tunnel, one of the few small things everyday that made her smile. Eventually, she developed a hopeless crush which grew into adoration that was somehow, incredibly, reciprocated by him. He was the perfect prince, though she may have been less than worthy at times, she also tried her best to make him happy. For a long time, they did make each other happy. Fights were mostly small, but their growing intensity began to indicate the underlying rifts beneath, although he thought she saw them when she did not. Thus, they were undone.

He broke up with her near their anniversary, saying he no longer had any romantic feelings for her. She cried endlessly, screamed when alone, felt herself drowning in the same turbulent storm of emotions that envelop any girl hearing the equivalent of “I got bored with you, you’re no longer worth it.”

Some of you will remember thinking it’s unfair, “why should I have to suffer while all s/he has to feel is minor guilt?”. Life in general will seem to lose meaning, every moment will remind you of that other person somehow, breathing becomes difficult at times, and the walls close in around you. How could everyone else just go on; something is fundamentally wrong with the world. And there’s no one to turn to, to fix things.

So here’s the inspiring part of this story:

Your fairytale romance may not last, yes. But in life, it’s not always the fairytale that matters. Someone once said, “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.” When that happens, just be sure not to forget the rest of your life is there, waiting to be picked up and continued, lived better than ever. The tears will run out. The screaming will stop. The heartbreak will end. Fairy tales end; life doesn’t.

Keep marching on. You are not alone.
