From time to time I’ve been bullied in school. I grew up in Spain, so as a kid I was bullied from being the brazilian one. Then when I came to Brazil they bullied me because I couldn’t write as well as them in our language. I went to a different school later and was the new girl. Ended up moving again to another school where no one actually liked me.
Not too long ago, I went to the USA as an exchanged student. Seeing as I’m not the popular kind of girl, I wasn’t welcome there either. I’m sure a lot of people in the USA are accepting, but I had the bad luck of ending up in a place where people thought it was funny to ask if in my country they drove cars naked, if I owned a monkey, if I lived in the jungle and shit like that.
And you know the only person in the whole school who stood by me? The only person who made those months bearable? A gay boy who didn’t have it easy, but still never judged me and took his time to get to know me.
So I wear the purple shirt today, because what gay people suffer is loads greater than what I went through. Because the things the guy who helped me went through were no joke. No one deserves to be hated for being themselves.
Bullying is a crime and if you hate gays, I pity you. You are missing out on a whole lot of awesome people.
